Maserati Visit
On 25 June five Maserati cars descended on the castle and were pictured outside the front.
For Maserati enthusiasts the following information was sent to the castle by Andrew Green:
The oldest, silver, car is a 1962 3500 GTI Vignale Spyder of which approximately 242 were built between 1960 and 1964. This particular car benefitted from Lucas fuel injection, a 5 speed gearbox and disc brakes all-round. The 3500 GT and its different variations was the mainstay of Maserati production during this period. The engine is an in line 6 cylinder, derived from the famous 250F Grand Prix cars of 1954 to 1957.
The yellow coupe is a 3200 GTA from a period of 1997 to 2001. The 3200 model was one of the last cars made by Maserati before Ferrari, and FIAT, become more involved in the current ownership and production of Maserati cars. This particular car was imported from the Middle East, is left hand drive and benefits from an automatic gearbox. The V8 engine was designed by Maserati themselves.
The blue spyder is known as a 4200 Cambio Corsa spyder. The 4200 range were built between 2002 and 2007. The V8 engine was built by Ferrari on behalf of Maserati and Ferrari were also involved in other areas of production responsibility. The Cambio Corsa is the name given to the electro magnetic clutch, derived from the contemporary Ferrari road cars and to some extent Ferrari racing cars.
The Bordeaux coloured car is from the range of Granturismo cars which succeeded the 4200 models. The engine is similar at 4200 cc, but the car is a genuine automatic, with a specially designed ZF gear box. The series was launched in 2007 and continues to be in production. Indeed later in the day a grey Granturismo joined us. That car is the latest Granturismo S model with an enlarged 4700cc engine.
The grey 4 door saloon is the fifth generation of the "Quattroporte" saloon. The particular car was built in 2008 and has an engine similar to the burgundy Granturismo. The current models use the larger engine similar to those of the Granturismo S range.
The first generation of Quattroporte was introduced in 1963 with an engine derived from the V8 Maserati racing cars of 1957 and later. The cars were popular in period with several film stars and Luciano Pavarotti is believed to be amongst the list of owners. Maserati continued to make Quattroporte cars during most subsequent decades and currently seem to enjoy the favour of Jeremy Clarkson from time to time!
